The METHOD

Complex skills such as Process Engineering, Quality Systems Management, and Shop Floor Management require both integration of tools, and the support of the entire structure.

Industry has made a critical mistake in not recognizing that multi-disciplinary training must be tailor fit to the application if it is to work. You can give people specific tools to use, but unless you can teach them how to combine them, and when to use them, you may as well expect someone to pound in nails with a screwdriver! Skills and Culture must both be part of the solution.

The specific plan of action starts with selection of a primary focus. We will then create a development strategy that directly affects the individuals of the primary focus, while indirectly training all others to incorporate the cultural changes.

For most situations, support is in your plant only a few days per week. On those days, the following happens:

  • Assessment of factory situations
  • Targeted training with individuals and groups
  • Making of assignments
  • Review of assignments and progress

Maximum development of your people, with minimal cost for on-site support.

As compared to the “impact event” strategy, the longer mentoring relationship gives the following advantages:

  • Ability to mentor individuals in application of new skills.
  • Ability to observe the factory over longer time periods to modify plans and goals accordingly.
  • Ability to spread investment over a period that includes time when improvement is recognized.
